The Gift of Gift Tags

2 January, 2009 | Houselock | tags: , , , .

The Houses pattern is nearing completion, so I thought I’d show you the little gift that will come with it. Printable pictures you can use as gift tags or for your own records. Just like the birdy labels I posted earlier, they have garment care symbols that you can fill in yourself.

The new website is also coming along, slowly and quietly like the snow, and a very cold summerhouse has decided my next project for me. Wait and see!

Log Cabin

I have written up my solution to the little challenge I posed in Playing Houses as a PDF. I hope you enjoy it! It’s a very quick knit and I think quite sweet. If you think of any more solutions, please don’t hesitate to post them. I’d also love to hear how you get on with my explanation (it’s far easier to execute than to explain, believe me!).

Scheming

Scheming Schematic It’s difficult to ignore the negative connotations of the words ‘designing’, ’scheming’, and ‘calculating’ when you’re knee-deep in writing up a pattern. I certainly wouldn’t appreciate being labelled with any of these words, but I have been occupied in them nevertheless. It strikes me that some schematic templates for basic knitted items wouldn’t go amiss either, since it’s a bit fiddly drawing them neatly, though not particularly difficult. I have also been re-reading Edward Tufte’s amazing Envisioning Information (uk | us) for inspiration. I highly recommend it for anyone, even if you’re not interested in design it will help you recognise and appreciate good design when you encounter it. Just flipping through the book is a small epiphany. It is full of beautiful images from many cultures and eras, and the text that accompanies them always appears on the same page; no flipping back and forth! It makes me itch to sort out those indecipherable Arriva Trains Wales timetables.

In the meantime, my boyfriend’s opinion on garment ease brought me a smile: ‘it’s nice if there’s room for two’. Aww.

Houses Slipover Pattern Preview

26 November, 2008 | Houselock | tags: , , , , , .

This post is in celebration of the last row of Houses, a simple slipover knitted in the round, and the last line of Close Knit, the novel I have been writing for National Novel Writing Month. I wrote my 50,000th word while wearing the newly finished and blocked Houses Slipover (or vest if you prefer), and I can vouch for its cosiness. It is knit in 4 ply wool, as I have mentioned before, which makes it thin and drapey, while warm, and perfect for layering. I am in love. I have yet to finish writing up the pattern, mainly because I started thinking about pattern design, but it will be available very soon. Subscribe to the blog via Bloglines or Google Reader or email to be updated when it’s available. In the meantime, here are some photos (more will soon be available on Flickr), and some basic information.

Snug as Houses

I’ve almost finished my first pattern for the first Laylock collection. It is a vest/slipover knit in Rowan Pure Wool 4 ply. Here’s a sneak peek:

Meanwhile, I loved Lara Cameron’s (of Kirin’s Notebook & Ink & Spindle) post on tips for starting a small craft business. Especially the secret pricing formula. Oooh! I love Lara’s work. One of my secret wishes is to design fabrics one day.

designing...

Welcome to the Laylock blog. The purpose of this blog is mainly to keep you informed of what’s going on behind the scenes at Laylock. Please remember to subscribe via your feed reader to receive updates on when new patterns are made available.

That said, I am finally beginning to knit and write up designs I have had in my mind and in my notebooks for months, or in some cases for years. They will be available as PDF downloads, and grouped into ever-changing collections. The first collection will be knit in greys, blacks, whites and lilac accents. You can see the beginnings of a swatch for the first pattern above, in delicious Rowan Pure Wool 4 ply. Any guesses what it might be? :)
