Introduction
About Laylock
Laylock is a one-person knitwear (and knitware) design busy-ness that is footloose & fancy-free. It is currently based in the folds of the Welsh countryside, which is a great source of inspiration for me. Its aim, its passion, its raison d’étre is to produce patterns that are:
- elegant
- written simply and effectively
- designed innovatively and intuitively
- laid out on the page so that they are easy to follow and beautiful to behold
- well photographed.
Laylock, is an old word for the lilac; a name that I think brings together nature, colour, and literature, which I try to reflect in all Laylock pieces, and here on the website. I also hope to promote knitting as a mindful, calming, ethical, and economical art and craft, which helps people create and realise the hidden value of the garments they wear.
A Close-Knit Planet
I believe that knitting can help make the world a better place, don’t you?
- When you knit your own garments, you know where the labour is coming from. You also have a choice over yarn sources and suppporting local producers. Knit your own ethics into your garments.
- Laylock patterns are available digitally, giving you the chance to save paper.
- Make garments that fit you, rather than buying ones that don’t.
- Don’t throw away old knits; recycle or alter them! It’s easy to unravel and reknit garments that you no longer wear, or to alter garments that you (or your little ones) have grown out of. Good quality yarns can be reknit many times, and this is a great way to save money and realise the value of things you already own. Vintage knitting books are particularly helpful in providing information on altering knits, so check your local charity shops!
- You can knit all Laylock patterns for charity and non-profit organisations. Redistribution of the patterns, or selling for profit, however, are not permitted. Please email me if you need further clarification.
- Snuggle up and turn your heating down. There will soon be many patterns that can help you keep warm at home!
About Collections
Collections are patterns that are grouped together thematically. They are designed to be aesthetically harmonious, in colour scheme and design. They are seasonal, but continuously updated with new patterns. At the moment, patterns can only be purchase separately, but in future collections may be released for download as a whole.
About Derya
I am currently available for knitwear design & writing commissions. My name is Derya Davenport, and I’m behind everything you see at Laylock. I design the knitwear, take the photographs, code the website, and write every single word. It means I have to wear a lot of hats, but I’m helped along by many lovely people. Although I grew up in Ankara, I studied English at Aberystwyth University, and have been spending a lot of time in Wales. I knit continental style, with the yarn in my left hand. If you’re interested in working with me, please contact me. You can also find me in other places around the internet: Ravelry, Flickr, Twitter, Last.fm & GoodReads.
Thank You:
to my parents, for everything, always.
to my family, for their enthusiasm and support.
to Al, for all his help.
to everyone who knits my patterns, or enjoys my work.
to you, for reading.
Colophon
The website runs on Wordpress, and is built using the Blueprint CSS Framework. It also uses the lovely Fugue Icons, and Silk Icons, and many JQuery plugins.
